Above the shores of Lake Tahoe you will find winter skiing at its best. Each year, the Sierras, including Truckee and Tahoe Basin, get pounded with tons of snow. Don't miss the impressive terrain on Jibboom and Axe, including 8 to 10 jibs and 5 hits. Not to mention the 20 plus trails for free riding and skiing pleasure.
Truckee, Tahoe Basin, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Diamond Peak, and Homewood Mountain Resort are a great start for die-hard powder buffs who can’t wait to attack the verticals. Cross-country skiers will have a blast at Royal Gorge with more than 100 kilometers of open trails.
Make sure to be part of the popular Learn to Ski Weekend, which usually takes place in early December at Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl, Homewood, Northstar, Mt. Rose, Diamond Peak, and Boreal. Novice skiers and snowboarders can get all-day beginner lift tickets, lessons and gear rental for great prices.
There’s something for everyone, and the intermediate and expert skiers know their beginner cohorts are in good hands. Snow toys for boarders and skiers looking for more kicks are here. Northstar has mid-mountain fun at Gravity Garage, including Snowfoxes, Snowscoots, and their new K-2 Snowbike. Snowscoots give a BMX-trick like ride for those who play in the halfpipe for a little air. It’s basically a cross between a scooter and a snowboard. These snowbikes have been used in Europe for 50 years. Tubing in Squaw Valley’s High Camp requires no special skills or equipment, with wide-open boulevards of sliding terrain with rolls, banks, and berms, plus slow lanes for less adventurous tubers.
